AIMS:
To promote and reward the highest standards of learning and teaching in dentistry by:
- Encouraging good practice in the provision of high quality dental education within the non-professorial group of dental teachers
- Recognising the varied contribution to teaching and learning that educators can make at different stages of their career
- Acknowledging and rewarding dental educators by independent evaluation and recognition of the excellence of their educational contribution
- Promoting collaboration by scholarly engagement in dental education through national and international activities
- Encouraging innovation and insights into the educational experience of all members of the dental team and disseminating new knowledge
- Encouraging the pursuit of original research in dental education
- Inspiring greater engagement and participation in the annual meetings of ADEE

CRITERIA
Early Career Educators
A Portfolio that contains a brief Curriculum Vitae, reflective commentary (which includes self-evaluation and identification of the need for continuing self-development in education) upon the following aspects of their claim for the award:
- Minimum of 3 years and no more than 8 years as a dental educator
- Evidence of continuous engagement with dental education
- Evidence of particular strengths and/or innovation in one or more areas of dental education (e.g. chair-side teaching; lecturing; small group teaching; development of innovative educational material; assessment; curriculum development; student support; participation and noteworthy contribution to ADEE/DentEd working groups or Special Interest Groups; collaboration in grant applications for pedagogical research and/or development)
- Evidence of educational organisation and management responsibility in own institution (e.g. organiser for a particular year or topic within the dental curriculum)
- Minimum of 5 papers published in peer-reviewed journals (at least two of which should be related to dental education)
- Evidence of participation in educational events (e.g. attendance +/- presentation of paper or poster at ADEE meeting; attendance+/- presentation of paper or poster at at least one other educational meeting such as the Education Research Group of IADR)
- Evidence of local and national collaboration in educational activities
- Evidence of basic training as a dental educator (e.g. attendance at teaching the teachers' events; successful completion of ADEE educational courses; successful completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education)
- Evidence of local or national esteem
The Portfolio should include a letter of support from the dean or head of school and from the lead for learning and teaching in their school and university where it is appropriate.
Applicants should also express their willingness to present a poster or paper at the following year's ADEE annual meeting, and to respond to questionnaires circulated by EDEAC from time to time. (Deans of schools should recognise this requirement for continuing commitment to ADEE and enable their award holder to attend the following year.) In addition to the certificate, the award winner will be allowed free registration at the annual meeting and celebration dinner of ADEE the following year.

Mature Educators
A Portfolio that contains a brief Curriculum Vitae, reflective commentary (which includes self-evaluation and identification of the need for continuing self-development in education) upon the following aspects of their claim for the award:
- Minimum of 9 years as a dental educator
- Evidence of continuous engagement with dental education
- Evidence of particular strengths and/or innovation in one or more areas of dental education (e.g. chair-side teaching; lecturing; small group teaching; development of innovative educational material; assessment; curriculum development; participation and noteworthy contribution to ADEE/DentEd working groups or Special Interest Groups; leadership or collaboration in applications for grants for pedagogical research and/or development)
- Evidence of a leadership role in educational activity (e.g. chair of curriculum committee in home institution; leader /senior member of a postgraduate learning and teaching course; membership of national educational committee; holder of office in specialist society such as European Orthodontic Society)
- Evidence of pedagogical support for junior members of staff
- Evidence of national and international educational collaboration
- Minimum of 10 papers published in peer-reviewed journals (the majority of which should preferably be related to dental education)
- Evidence of participation in educational events (e.g. attendance +/- presentation of paper or poster at ADEE meeting; attendance at +/- presentation of paper or poster to at least one other prestigious educational meeting such as the Education Research Group of IADR)
- Evidence of basic training as a dental educator (e.g. attendance at teaching the teachers' events; successful completion of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education)
- Other evidence of national or international esteem
The Portfolio should include a letter of support from the dean or head of school, the Learning and Teaching lead in the university (where appropriate) and from at least one other senior member of the profession who is in a position to comment on the individual's contribution to learning and teaching in the profession.
Applicants should also express their willingness to present a poster or paper at the following year's ADEE annual meeting, and to respond to questionnaires circulated by EDEAC from time to time. In addition to the certificate, the award winner will be allowed free registration at the annual meeting of ADEE the following year.

ELIGIBILITY
Applications will be accepted from educators in dental schools in membership of ADEE
A maximum of 2 applications from each school will be accepted in any one year, preferably one for the Early Career Educator and one for the Mature Educator.
Holders of the existing excellence award are not eligible to apply.
APPLICATION FEE
Applications will only be accepted once the appropriate fee (€100) has been received by ADEE. Contact Administrator@adee.org for details of payment methods. Applications should be submitted to the ADEE Administrator by the end of March.
APPLICATION
There are no application forms. The information submitted should be in the form of a word processed portfolio (details in CRITERIA) written in English, Arial font, size 12, double spaced. The following checklist should help ensure that your application is complete.
- Make it clear which award you are applying for (Early Career or Mature)
- Brief CV (maximum 2 pages) include a colour passport size photograph embedded in the text, and postal and e mail address.
- The portfolio
- A letter of support from your Dean or Head of School
- A letter of support from your Learning and Teaching lead (where appropriate)
- A letter of support from at least one other senior member of the profession (Mature Award applicants only)
- Statement of intent to present a poster or paper at the next ADEE meeting. (Expected of those who are successful, optional for those who are unsuccessful. Please note that there will be free registration for successful applicants)
- Agreement to respond to questionnaires related to the award
- Payment of Application fee of €100.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE
To be eligible for inclusion in a given year's appraisal process all appropriate application information, application fee and documentation should reach the ADEE office by 5.00PM (local time in Ireland ) on the last day of March. Applications received after that date/time will not be considered.

NOTIFICATION
Applicants will receive acknowledgement of receipt of their application. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their submission prior to the presentation ceremony that will be held during the General Assembly at the annual meeting of ADEE. Feedback on the application will be available, on request, from the Chair of the Advisory Committee.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The committee is comprised of a Chair; the President OR Secretary General of the Association for Dental Education in Europe (ex officio); AND one member of the Executive (ex officio); three other members, at least one of whom should be a holder of the award; an independent educator who is familiar with European Higher Education.
The Chair is currently Prof Richard Oliver. The period of office for the non ex-officio members will be three years, renewable for one further term; appointments will be made by the ADEE executive.
The role of EDEAC is to promote the educational excellence award to eligible colleagues, to sustain the currency' and status of the award, to advise ADEE executive who should receive the award and to provide feedback to unsuccessful candidates. The decision of ADEE Executive is final.
