Science and the Competent Dentist: an inter-professional perspective
24-26 August 2016
On behalf of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Barcelona, we are proud to invite you to Barcelona to the 42nd Annual Meeting of ADEE in 2016. Situated on the northeastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula on the shores of the Mediterranean, Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain in both size and population.
A Mediterranean city, steeped in history, tradition and cultural influences, Barcelona is a large and diverse city with a population of 1.5 million at its core or more than 4 million if the outlying areas are included. Visitors unfamiliar with Barcelona’s history will be surprised that such a modern and enterprising city preserves its historic Gothic center almost intact. Seemingly curious contrasts such as a maze of narrow streets and the grid-like layout of the Eixample, modern high-rise and quaint squares co-exist side by side. Barcelona is a mix of modern cosmopolitan urban chic, costal beech splendor and historic beauty.
With over 63,000 students and 5,000 academic staff the University of Barcelona (or UB as it known locally) is the most formidable public institution of higher education in Catalonia. It caters to the needs of the greatest number of students and delivering the broadest and most comprehensive offering in higher educational courses. The UB is also the principal centre of university research in Spain and has become a European benchmark for research activity, both in terms of the number of research programmes it conducts and the excellence these have achieved. The UB is above all an urban university, outward-reaching and cosmopolitan like the city in which its campuses live. And because of this, it plays a direct and active part in the urban fabric of Barcelona, becoming a hub of cultural activity for the city itself. The UB campuses are spread out across the entire inner-city area, thus fostering a series of close ties between the institution of our University and the city around us.
The Department of Dentistry and Stomatology is located at the Campus de Bellvitge in the L'Hospitalet de Llobregat region of the city, a short journey from the airport and equally close to the city center by underground connection. The UB Faculty of Dentistry has almost 600 undergraduate students and also offers study at Master and Doctorate level. The Faculty has been a member of ADEE for many years and actively promote ADEE’s mission to improve and enhance the quality of dental education in Europe.
It is our pleasure to be the host of the upcoming Annual Meeting - Science and the Competent Dentist: an inter professional perspective, which will explore the relationship between Dentistry, Dental Education and other Health Sciences. We are also proud to pilot a number of changes to the ADEE annual meeting programme. You will note the date change and the removal of Saturday from the main programme, the reduction in speakers and balancing increase in workshops and poster session for delegates to engage it and pre and post meeting activities with partners. All of these have been introduced based on delegate’s feedback in recent years. The full programme will be published in March 2016.
On behalf of the local organising committee it will give us great pleasure to welcome you to our wonderful city by the sea and we promise you a challenging, exciting and new experience for our ADEE meeting. So save the date and see you in Barcelona.
