A new curriculum for dental hygienist education in Europe
Dental Hygienists training and education is not standardized across Europe, both in terms of formal recognized requirements for training and the level of training required: 17 out of 23 current programs exist as a bachelor degree of at least 3 years, representing 180 credits under the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation system. In order to meet the demands for establishing a common training and education framework for dental hygienists in Europe, EDHF developed from 2016 – 2019 a Common Education Framework (CEF) for Dental Hygienists in Europe, now ready to be disseminated at Dental Hygiene Programs across Europe. The CEF is based on the same principles as the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework for Graduating European Dentists. The four curriculum domains are: Professionalism, Safe and Effective Clinical Practice, Patient-Centred Care and Oral Health in Society, all defining learning outcomes.
In the upcoming SIG, EDHF likes to discuss the implementation of the curriculum and the continuation of this process e.g. the developing of competences and skills related to the learning outcomes. To secure that the curriculum is relevant and in line with modern principles for education and demands in society, communication strategies to update and adapt the curriculum if necessary, will be discussed as well.
