Session synopsis: 

An extension of the Wellbeing and Resilience COP where we will focus on students instead of staff. Participants in this session will have the opportunity to become involved in projects aimed at improving student resilience and well-being specifically.

Presentation of the Resilience level of dental students in Greece. Discussion of factors influencing resilience for dental students - Maria Antoniadou

Educational approaches for enhancing resilience:

Presentation of results of a survey of academics assessing current resilience teaching across dental institutions – Ruby Long

Presentation on network learning as a specific educational method for creating resilience in pioneering students - Birgit Vanderhaeghen 

Presentation of results regarding resilience levels among dental students that were obtained from a four-year experience in conducting a voluntary coaching lesson for dental students at the University of Athens - Maria Antoniadou 

Discussion on potential initiatives for building (resilience: Group discussion exploring the results of the survey and discussing potential initiatives for building resilience of oral health professional students - Ruby Long & Maria Antoniadou

Clinical lecturer in Restorative Dentistry

Ruby is a Clinical lecturer in Restorative Dentistry, Topic lead for Professionalism, and clinical lead for BDS Years 1&2 at Cardiff University. She is currently undertaking a PhD exploring resilience in Oral health education.

Shannu Bhatia

Director of staff and student matters
School of Dentistry Cardiff University, UK

Shanu is the Director of staff and student matters, Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant and Lead for Paediatric dentistry. She has an active interest in dental education. She leads students’ pastoral care, Equality Diversity and Inclusivity and Wellbeing with the School of Dentistry Cardiff University. She is the President designate of British Society of Paediatric dentistry 2024. She was the recipient of ADEE Dental education early career award in 2022.

Maria Antoniadou

Assistant Professor
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (GR)

Maria is Assistant Professor at the Department of Dentistry, School of Health Sciences, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with experience in the clinical and managerial practice of Dentistry. She has been a research and clinical member in the prosthetics clinic of the University of Freiburg in Germany. She holds a Master's Degree in Aesthetic Dentistry from the University of Athens, while her doctoral dissertation was on the application of dental biomaterials in the modern practice of dentistry. She is also a Certified Systemic Analyst Professional (CSAP) following the Executive Mastering Program in Systemic Management at the University of Piraeus, Greece. She specializes in dental psychology and patient coaching and management, professional counselling, performance enhancement and dental business initiative counselling, dental management, and marketing. She is also an ACSTH by HRE certified ICF program and AC Accredited Coach. She is the author of the book “Application of the Humanities and Basic Principles of Coaching in Health Sciences” (Athens 2021, Tsiotras Ed., ISBN:978-618-5495-45-9).

Zoe Abbas

Assistant Clinical Professor in Dental Public Health
University of Birmingham (UK)

Zoe Abbas is an Assistant Clinical Professor in Dental Public Health at the University of Birmingham (UK). Zoe has a keen interest in dental education and was awarded the ADEE Oral B Interprofessional Educator award in 2023. She is the interprofessional education lead at the University of Birmingham and has developed initiatives to promote student support and wellbeing.

Birgit Vanderhaeghen

Psychologist-psychotherapist and a lecturer at the at the dental hygiene programme
UCLL (Belgium)

Dr. Birgit Vanderhaeghen is a psychologist-psychotherapist and a lecturer at the at the dental hygiene programme at the university of applies sciences UCLL (Belgium). She coaches students with mental health issues. Furthermore, she studies learning networks as a learning method that strengthens resilience of students that are not familiar with higher education (pioneer students).

Becky Wassall

Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Specialist in Special Care Dentistry
Newcastle University (UK)

Dr Becky Wassall is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Specialist in Special Care Dentistry at Newcastle University (UK). Her postdoctoral research focused on the organisation and delivery of dental services for older people living and dying in care homes. She has wide experience in a variety of methodologies involved in health services research and is currently exploring the use of co-design approaches in implementation research. More recently, she was recognised by the Vice-Chancellor of Newcastle University, for her efforts in supporting student’s pastoral and wellbeing needs.

Learning Outcomes: 

By the end of the session the COP and ADEE members would be:

  1. Aware of the current resilience teaching for Oral health professional students across Europe
  2. Able to discuss potential opportunities and initiatives for Resilience teaching in Oral health professional education
  3. Aware of the value of systems thinking and co-design approaches to improving Student Support
  4. Aware of some initiatives currently used to enhance student support
