ADEE Executive Statement on the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union
As an association created to foster and enable harmonisation of dental education within Europe, ADEE is of course saddened by the decision of the British people to leave the European Union. However, ADEE has always been a non-political and collegial association in its approach to consensus making. An approach that remains committed to our primary aims and in particular the advancement of the highest level of health care for all the people of Europe. ADEE will continue to strive for collegiality and to foster convergence among its members and partners.
In the aftermath of the results of the recent referendum held in the United Kingdom, there is likely to be uncertainty, claims and counterclaims and much politicking by the leave and remain camps. Like many other associations and organisations ADEE would encourage its members to remain calm and open minded through this time of flux. It will not serve ADEE or our members well to be reactionary in any response.
The ADEE Executive would like to publically acknowledge the considerable contribution of the United Kingdom’s Dental Schools to ADEE over the past 40 years. These members have been among the driving forces for the advancement of the ADEE mission and your contribution and committment has been unquestionable. Your track record with ADEE is unblemished and ADEE membership remains very grateful and thankful to all our UK colleagues and friends for their commitment to our work. The United Kingdom has played a crucial and historical role in the overall development of European Dental Education.
The Executive would like to reassure our UK members that we respect the democratic decision of the people of the UK to leave the European Union. We also reassure these members that ADEE will work within any newly created agreements to enable their valuable inclusion in our future work.
ADEE is confident that our UK members will continue to drive and influence the work of ADEE well into the future as we shape and influence the education and training of the dental professions within Europe.
