ADEE Excellence in Dental Education Ceremony 2020

Monday 5th October 2020 saw Professor Ilze Akota, ADEE President and Dr Ronald Gorter, Chair of the ADEE Excellence in Dental Education Awards Committee recognise four colleagues for their achievements in dental education.

Details of this year's recipients are listed below

Philipp Kanzow
University Medical Center Göttingen, Germany

An Early Career Award is being presented to Philipp Kanzow,
University Medical Center Göttingen, Germany

After completing his studies, Philipp started to work as a dentist at the Department of Preventive Dentistry, Periodontology and Cariology in 2014. Since then, he has continuously educating students in both preclinical and clinical courses. In 2018, Philipp successfully participated in a structured teaching course organized by the local Division of Medical Education Research and Curriculum Development. Since 2019, he is responsible for the preclinical course in Operative Dentistry (sixth semester within undergraduate dental curriculum in Germany). Besides his other research areas, he has focused on educational research regarding scoring and credit assignment of single-choice and multiple-select multiple-choice item types.

Richeal Ni Riordain
University College Cork

An Early Career Award is being presented to Richeal Ni Riordain,
University College Cork, Ireland

Rícheal is a Consultant/Senior Lecturer in Oral Medicine in University College Cork Dental School Ireland, Honorary Associate Professor of Oral Medicine in University College London Eastman Dental Institute United Kingdom and Health Education England’s Regional Academic and Research Advisor for London United Kingdom. Qualified in Medicine and Dentistry, she has worked as a clinician and an educator in both fields. She teaches Oral Medicine and Clinical Medical Sciences in Dentistry and supervises doctoral students in both Cork and London. Rícheal has an Masters of Arts in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education with research interests focusing on Universal Design for Learning, interdisciplinary teaching and assessment.

Laura Gartshore
University of Liverpool

An Early Career Award is being presented to Laura Gartshore,
University of Liverpool, United Kingdom

Laura is a Senior Lecturer / Honorary Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at the University of Liverpool. She is BDS Programme Director at Liverpool as we introduce innovative curricula within the School. She is committed to facilitating student voice and support. She has led reform of academic advising in the School of Dentistry to develop a system that is distinctive, well-received and aligned with educational philosophy. The novel system enables undergraduates’ reflective practice and lifelong learning. Laura has been awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in the Lady Estelle Wolfson Emerging Leader Programme. She is a regular invited speaker for educational events in multidisciplinary areas of dentistry, medicine and leadership.

Carlos Serrano
Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA)

A Mature Career Award is being presented to Carlos Serrano,
Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA), The Netherlands

Carlos is an Assistant Professor at the department of Dental Education Research, Development & Innovation of the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA).  After several years teaching at the Department of Restorative Dentistry of his alma mater, Universidad de Concepcion in Chile, his work currently focuses on the development and implementation of new technologies to bridge the transition to clinical training in dentistry and improve safety in dental training.

His work also includes assessment of students’ learning experiences and educational environments for quality assurance, while being part of ACTA’s team dedicated to further develop simulation environments which are currently used in several dental programs worldwide.
